Turkey discussing Halkbank with the US, says Erdogan


A US court in May jailed a Halkbank executive for helping Tehran evade US sanctions and the US Treasury is also considering a fine against the bank.

President Tayyip Erdogan said he had discussed Turkey’s Halkbank with President Donald Trump, the lender faces potential US fines after an executive was convicted of taking part in a scheme to help Iran evade US sanctions.

The Turkish leader said that talks are underway about the issue andiIt is important that this process has begun.

The state-owned Halkbank denies any wrongdoing, Erdogan condemned the court case as a political attack on his government and Berat Albayrak, the Treasury and Finance Minister said that he did not expect the bank to face a fine in September, reported Reuters
